Our Story

Welcome to the Rural Municipality of Cymri No. 36, a vibrant, deeply-rooted community situated in the beautiful prairie landscapes of southeastern Saskatchewan. Encompassing a land area of 832.36 square kilometres, our RM is home to a dedicated population of approximately 524 residents who enjoy the perfect balance of peaceful rural living and industrial innovation.
Operating out of our municipal office at 52 Main Street in Midale, we proudly surround the town of Midale and the villages of Halbrite and Macoun. We are a community built on strong collaboration, forward-thinking industry, and a shared pride in our Saskatchewan heritage.

📜 Our History & Heritage
The RM of Cymri No. 36 was officially incorporated as a rural municipality on December 13, 1909. For well over a century, our region has served as a beacon of early pioneer resilience and agricultural progress.
A cherished symbol of our early history is the Steven Peterson Residence (originally constructed in 1916 as the Gustav Peterson Residence) located east of Halbrite. As one of the largest early structures in the district, this monumental wood-frame farmhouse served as a vital community gathering space—hosting early church services, local meetings, and social celebrations. Today, it stands as a designated Municipal Heritage Property, preserving the architecture and social spirit of our early homesteaders.

🌾 Industry & Economy
Historically founded as a premier grain and cattle farming district, Cymri has evolved into an economic powerhouse. Today, we sit at the active hub of Saskatchewan’s resource sector, where our deep-rooted agricultural base works hand-in-hand with a thriving oil and gas energy industry. This unique dual-industry economy drives local innovation, provides robust employment, and secures long-term sustainability for our local businesses and families.

⛺ Community & Recreation
Life in Cymri is enriched by our magnificent natural surroundings and active community spaces. We are proud to house portions of the scenic Mainprize Regional Park along the Souris River. As a premier local destination, the park offers premier golfing, camping, boating, and fishing for residents and visitors alike. Whether taking part in regional summer events or supporting local sports teams in neighbouring towns, our residents enjoy an exceptional quality of life.

🏛️ Municipal Governance
The RM of Cymri No. 36 is dedicated to maintaining high-quality infrastructure, transparent governance, and responsible environmental stewardship. We are led by an elected Reeve and a six-member Division Council, who meet on the second Monday of each month to ensure our community continues to grow, thrive, and serve generations to come.
